Canker Sore Treatment for Pain


Canker sores are also known as mouth blisters. They appear on the inside of the cheeks, lips, under the tongue and on gums as angry red blisters that have a white coating. There is no known cause yet for canker sores, but many experts believe that it may be caused by stress, unhealthy diet, and fluctuations in the hormones.

Women in their 20’s are usually the most prone to canker sores, but it can affect many other people. These sores are not contagious, however, they can often be extremely painful. In this article, you will be able to find ways to reduce the pain from canker sores.

Given a few days, canker sores can heal on their own. However, if you are in extreme pain you can take medication such as Tylenol or Advil. These have ibuprofen and acetaminophen that can be immediately effective against pain from canker sores. These are usually in tablet form, but there are gums and lozenges available. You can chew them or hold them in your mouth, over the site where the canker sores are. In this way, you are providing an analgesic effect to your sores, thus relieving pain.

Milk of Magnesia and Benadryl are also useful for relieving the pain from canker sores. Mix these two in equal amounts, take a spoonful of the resulting mixture, and swish it in the mouth, taking care to wash the sores with it. Do this for 30 seconds, and repeat it at 4 to 6 hour intervals so that there will be less pain from the canker sores.

Since a canker sore usually resolves itself after a few days, if it persists for a week up to ten days, you should go to your doctor. If the canker sores are so painful that it prevents you from eating, or if you have fever during the time you have canker sores, your doctor should be consulted also. These may be an indication that there is an infection in your body, and your doctor might have to prescribe antibiotics.

Your doctor may prescribe a variety of antibiotics and creams for you to treat your canker sores. These usually take effect quickly and efficiently. You should follow your doctor’s prescription to treat your canker sores religiously. If your doctor says that you would have to continue treatment even after the canker sores have healed, you must do so because the pills would have to complete a cycle for it to have an effect. It is also done to prevent the reoccurrence of the canker sores.

Because the exact causes of canker sores are still unknown, there may be no guaranteed way to prevent having them. However, experts suggest that objects with harsh textures, such as toothbrushes with hard bristles, should not be used on the mouth. Additionally, avoid foods that may cause irritations such as spicy dishes.
