Acne is a reddish blemish appearing on the surface of our skin. There are different types of acne, categorized as inflammatory and non-inflammatory. There is no clear answer how acnes develop into the two types, but research tells us that our skin secretes an oily substance called sebum and when this is trapped and mixed with dead cells and facial hair or hair under the skin, our face becomes an environment where bacteria could grow and manifest as acne. When this acne is not deep and just close to the surface, it is manifested as either a blackhead or a whitehead. As they are closed, they are the non-inflammatory acne. The inflammatory type of acne on the other hand are those that swollen, painful to our touch and may also feel hot. They are also called as zits or pimples, and because they extend deep into our skin layers, they could cause scarring. Not all people experience the same types of scarring. As there is a different facial topology for each person, different people experience different scarring types. These are the different possible types of scarring: "Ice pick" scars (which is similar to how chickenpox scars look) Shallow imperfections Deep scars Acne scars and their formation has very limited research, thus the treatment for such is also very limited. Just as different people experience different kinds of acne and scarring, treatment could not be generalized for all. No single treatment is advisable and applicable for everyone. It is always best to consult a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for a case-to-case basis of treatment. They will determine the appropriate treatment, or combination of, which will be best for your skin. Dermabrasion - The skin is numbed or frozen and then damaged skin is removed using a machine. This allows new skin to grow. This is different from microdermabrasion, a process that does not help remove acne scarring. Laser Resurfacing- This method uses laser to get rid of the old and damaged skin, allowing a new skin to grow in its place. Right now, laser resurfacing is a close second to dermabrasion in regards to the field of skin resurfacing. Chemical Peels - Just as the name suggests, this makes use of chemicals to peel away the top layer of the skin. This would allow a newer and smoother layer to grow. Punch Technique - With this technique, the pitted scar is removed then the wound is closed to allow it to heal. Three different techniques are available: punch excision, punch replacement and punch elevation. Subcision - In subcision, the scars are disconnected from deeper tissues of the skin. This would allow blood to pool under the skin. When the blood clots, connective tissues are formed under the scar and this will level off with the skin's surface. Augmentation - Collagen is injected under the skin and it levels the scar to the surface. Sometimes, one's own fat could also be used. Even with the treatments mentioned above, prevention will still remain to be the best option. We have to take care of our skin, and consult with doctors regarding the best possible care for our skin. If acne already exists, consult doctors for the best acne treatment to prevent scarring. |
